Happening in Harrison

Say NO to a gun store in the heart of Harrison!

Dear Community Member:

Just recently, Harrison residents learned that a gun store plans to open in downtown Harrison at 261 Halstead Ave.   A gun store at this location – in the center of town, within 500 ft. of St. Gregory the Great’s Church and 1000 ft. of Parsons Elementary School – will undermine the maintenance of a Gun-Free School Zone under federal law.

Public safety should be a priority for local government, and our children are entitled to a Gun-Free School Zone as they enter and exit school.

Residents who have inquired about how and why this store is slated to open with no broad public review or hearing have been told that it is exempt from any required approval by the Mayor or Town Board.

But it is unclear whether or not our elected leaders explored all possible measures to prevent the store from opening, and hearing from residents who do not believe a gun store should be located in or near a Gun-Free School Zone may encourage them to review this matter more carefully.

If you agree that this is NOT an appropriate location for a gun store and would like to help find options to prevent it, please express your concerns by:

§  Signing this petition

§  Attending the Town Board Meeting on Thursday, November 3rd at 7:30PM to make clear that this is a local priority that must be addressed by our local leaders.

Needless to say, please be civil and constructive in your comments on social media and in any public meetings.

Thank you in advance for your engagement and support. We are hopeful that by working together we can ensure that our community remains a safe, secure and desirable one.

Orienta: Westchester’s authentic beach community

From The Herd
We love E.J. Kelly’s take on the Orienta community of Mamaroneck….

Few coastal enclaves rival Orienta Point. Occupying a stout peninsula prodding the gentle waters of Long Island Sound, the Mamaroneck neighborhood captures the grace of Newport, the laid-backness of Burlington, Vermont and every convenience its prime Westchester location has to offer, keeping the city just over a half hour commute by car or train.

“It’s hip, it’s low-key, and elegant without being showy,” explained Edie Roth, a longtime resident and agent with our Larchmont brokerage. “It’s a true beach community that just happens to be in Westchester.”

Open space, generously-sized parcels and three private clubs have kept the New England coastal lifestyle within easy reach for the movers and shakers of Metropolis for well over a century. By the 1920s and 30s, the peninsula became home to an affluent subdivision, leaving an architectural legacy revered today. Hollywood pioneer D.W. Griffith, who co-founded United Artists with Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, subsequently had his studio at Orienta. Edgewater Point, the gated enclave that’s arguably the most historic and exclusive corner of the neighborhood, was the singular estate of Henry Morrison Flagler, Standard Oil partner, developer and railroad baron who was dubiously the original Palm Beach “snowbird.”

835 Claflin Avenue (above), completed in 1887, contrasts more recent additions like 1077

Seven Oaks Lane (left/middle) and 1044 Cove Road (right).

But despite its pedigree, stodginess isn’t in Orienta’s vernacular.

“There is a real community here,” Arenas remarked. “I moved here from the south knowing nobody and was immediately welcomed. It felt like home instantly.”

A short bike path, called “the escapade,” is a popular route for dog-walking, two wheeler-training and strolling towards the shore. The same natural barriers acting as the metronome preserving the tempo of life here have also attracted rare wildlife for this corner of Westchester, including owl, wild turkey and, recently, a bald eagle.

The crow’s nest at 1055 Seven Oaks Lane (above). 1010 Constable (below), a converted coach, offers lofty, urban interiors with the elegance of a bygone era.

Nailheads, in or out?

Just when I thought Nailheads were “out” I came across this blog post from elementsofstyleblog.com and thought, hmmmmm

Nailed It.

I recommend wool berber or wool sisal runners with contrast banding to many clients due to their hard-wearing tendencies for busy families as well as classic good looks. Re-doing a trendy stair runner is not something you want to do often! But lately I’ve been trying to think of ways to dress them up a little and came across some images of runner borders being detailed with nailheads and I love it! This Barry Dixon example is just bananas:

That little detailed flounce at the end is bad-ass.

Some other examples:

What do you think? Yea or nay? Anyone done this in their own house?
